Red-cockaded Woodpeckers are a southeastern US species limited to habitat with old-growth southern pines. This habitat has been severely reduced due to human interference and these birds are now listed as "Near Threatened." There is some good work being done north of Charleston, South Carolina in rehabilitating these forest and the Red-cockaded seems to be doing well there.
